Ostium, a decentralized trading platform on Arbitrum, has confirmed that the $23.75 million hack earlier this week came from a breach in its off-chain infrastructure. The funds were taken from the OLP vault, which holds liquidity provider money. The protocol’s smart contracts and multisig wallet were not compromised, according to the team.

Investigation findings and immediate response

In a post-mortem released after the incident, Ostium said the attack did not come from a weakness in the on-chain code. That was a common fear at first. Instead, the attackers hit the backend systems that handle data processing, order management, and other non-blockchain functions. Those systems were the entry point, and the vault was drained.

Trading and withdrawals have been paused since the attack. The platform is working with security firms and law enforcement to trace the stolen funds. Ostium has said its core smart contracts and multisig governance mechanisms stayed secure and were not part of the attack.

What this says about DeFi security

This is another reminder that DeFi security is not only about smart contracts. On-chain audits have gotten better, but off-chain services like price feeds, order matching, and interface hosting remain a weaker link. Many projects use centralized backend components, and those can be targeted with traditional hacking methods.

Security researchers have been saying for a while that audits need to cover both layers. The Ostium incident fits a pattern. Hackers are increasingly looking at the infrastructure that supports DeFi apps, not just the contracts users interact with.

For users, there are open questions. The platform has not said how it plans to compensate affected users. That kind of plan often comes after the investigation wraps up. In the meantime, users should watch official Ostium channels and avoid trading or withdrawing until the platform is declared safe.

What users should do now

People with funds on Ostium should be cautious. It is too early to know if recovery is possible. In similar cases, stolen funds are often hard to trace once they move through mixers or bridges. Diversifying across platforms is never a bad idea, but it doesn’t fix the immediate problem.

The broader DeFi community is paying attention. This incident may push more projects to add real-time monitoring, redundancy, and stricter access controls to their backend systems. That would be a positive step, though change tends to come slowly.

For now, the main takeaway is simple. Smart contracts are not the only attack surface. Off-chain infrastructure matters, and it is often overlooked. The Ostium hack shows what can happen when that part of the stack is weak.
