USDT0 launches on Stellar (XLM), unlocking global liquidity for payments, DeFi, and emerging markets. Here’s what it means for users and developers.
The Stellar (XLM) network has officially integrated USDT0, an omnichain version of Tether’s USDT, marking a major enhancement to its liquidity and cross-chain capabilities. Built on LayerZero’s Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT) standard, USDT0 allows users to access a unified pool of USDT liquidity spanning multiple blockchain ecosystems.
USDT0 is designed to facilitate seamless movement of Tether’s stablecoin across networks without relying on wrapped tokens or isolated liquidity pools. This structural innovation could significantly elevate Stellar’s utility for payments, DeFi, and emerging-market use cases. According to Tether, USDT0 is backed 1:1 by USDT, ensuring parity with the world’s most widely used stablecoin, currently valued at $183.27 billion in market capitalization (as of September 2, 2026).
Why USDT0 Matters for Stellar
Stellar has long positioned itself as a blockchain optimized for real-world payments and cross-border finance, particularly in emerging markets. The addition of USDT0 aligns with its mission by providing users access to global liquidity at minimal cost. On Stellar, USDT0 transactions feature sub-cent fees and settle in just five seconds, making it an attractive option for high-frequency payment flows.
This integration is especially impactful in regions like Latin America, Africa, and Asia-Pacific—areas where Tether’s USDT already dominates as a preferred settlement currency. By combining USDT’s liquidity with Stellar’s fast, low-cost infrastructure, users in these markets can now send, receive, and hold USDT0 without the friction of conversions or high fees.
DeFi and Institutional Adoption
USDT0’s inclusion on Stellar offers significant opportunities for DeFi protocols and institutional participants. With over $180 billion in market cap tied to USDT, Stellar-based DeFi projects can now leverage USDT0 as collateral, for trading, or in yield-generating strategies. SushiSwap, a leading DeFi platform, has already integrated USDT0 on Stellar, with more partnerships expected to follow.
For exchanges, fintechs, and enterprises already using Stellar, the rollout of USDT0 simplifies treasury operations and broadens the range of services they can offer. For example, exchanges can provide fast USDT0 deposits and withdrawals, while payment service providers can streamline settlements with counterparties who prefer USDT. Key platforms supporting USDT0 on Stellar include Kraken, Bitget, Lobstr, and Fireblocks, with additional integrations on the horizon.
USDT0’s Cross-Chain Evolution
USDT0 represents a broader strategic shift for Tether and LayerZero toward unifying USDT liquidity across blockchains. Initially launched in January 2025 on Kraken’s Ethereum Layer 2 network, this omnichain stablecoin has rapidly expanded its footprint. In June 2026, USDT0 surpassed $100 billion in cumulative transaction volume, affirming its growing relevance in the DeFi ecosystem.
Unlike traditional USDT, which is issued natively on specific blockchains like Ethereum or Tron, USDT0 uses a lock-and-mint mechanism via LayerZero’s messaging protocol. This allows users to move liquidity seamlessly between supported chains while maintaining a single, unified supply of USDT.
