The European Union has begun investigating Google over possible violations of competition laws linked to its artificial intelligence (AI) search features.
Officials are also reviewing how Google’s AI uses YouTube videos to generate these summaries. The inquiry will assess whether Google is giving itself an unfair edge by freely using material from sites and by setting conditions that may disadvantage online publishers and creators.
According to the Commission, the main concern is that Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode might rely on publishers’ work without fair compensation.

The Commission notes that publishers and creators may have little freedom to opt out of having their material used, especially since YouTube requires users to allow Google to process their videos if they want to upload them at all.
Another issue raised by the EU is Google’s control over access to YouTube data. Competing AI companies are reportedly blocked from using this content to train their systems.
Google responded, “This complaint risks stifling innovation in a market that is more competitive than ever. Europeans deserve to benefit from the latest technologies, and we will continue to work closely with the news and creative industries as they transition to the AI era”.
