BitMEX has announced it will permanently close operations in September. The exchange is widely known for creating the perpetual swap in 2016, and its departure is being read by many as a sign that the old days of crypto trading are truly over. It won’t be alone. At least three other crypto firms have announced closures or bankruptcies in the last week. BitMart told users they have 30 days to close their trades and six months to withdraw funds. People are worried about delays, though the exchange hasn’t said exactly why it’s closing.

Retail trading is drying up

Analysts argue that exchanges cannot survive on hype anymore. They need compliance, proof of reserves, and cross-asset trading. Jason Fernandes from AdLunam says it comes down to a steep fall in retail participation. There just isn’t enough volume, and interest has faded even in Telegram groups. He expects more closure announcements and thinks only exchanges that don’t depend on retail trading will survive in the short term.

The numbers back that up. Spot trading volume across major centralized exchanges fell to $1.05 trillion by April 2026, the lowest monthly total in 25 months. In South Korea, trading volume at the top five exchanges reportedly dropped 88 percent. That’s not a small dip. That’s a structural change.

Not just exchanges

Movement Labs and Storj Labs have also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, making them the third and fourth crypto-related company failures in seven days. Investor capital seems to be shifting heavily toward artificial intelligence. The crypto industry is no longer the only shiny object in the room.

There’s also regulation to consider. The EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) makes it expensive for smaller regional venues to operate. That pressure, combined with weak trading and rising compliance costs, probably explains why some platforms are choosing to leave quietly.

For years, platforms like BitMEX relied on their reputation and the high-leverage habits of day traders. That model worked when there was enough retail money flowing in. Now it doesn’t. The closures are not exactly a surprise if you’ve been watching the trading data. But seeing a name like BitMEX go still feels significant.

What happens next is uncertain. It’s possible that only a handful of large, institutional-friendly exchanges will remain. It’s also possible that some regional platforms pivot to other services. Either way, the early freewheeling era of crypto trading seems to have come to a final blow. There’s no clear sign retail trading will return to the levels seen in 2021. The quiet months may continue for a while.
