On Sept. 24, Phantom will remove Sui from its wallet interface. The change comes about a month after Phantom and Sui said they had decided to end the integration. After that date, Phantom will no longer show Sui balances, support Sui sends or swaps, or connect to Sui decentralized applications.

This does not mean the coins disappear. The assets stay on the Sui blockchain, tied to the account credentials. Phantom’s own guide says users can restore access through a compatible wallet later. Sept. 24 ends access through Phantom, not ownership.

What is actually being removed

Sui support in Phantom launched on Jan. 29, 2025. At the time, the Sui Foundation described sending, receiving, swapping and app connections through Phantom. That made the wallet a distribution surface for Sui. The same interface can now remove Sui from view.

Phantom’s Aug. 24 announcement said the two sides jointly decided to end support. No reason was given. There is also no count of affected users. Phantom’s total monthly active users were cited as 15 million, but that says nothing about how many used Sui inside Phantom. The public record cannot measure how much Sui activity depended on the wallet.

User choices and risk

Phantom’s guidance lays out different paths. Users who want to stay inside Phantom can swap out of native Sui. Recovery-phrase users who want to keep Sui can import the same account into another wallet such as Slush. Ledger users have a separate route that keeps keys on the hardware device.

The fee waiver is narrower than it may look. It only covers Phantom’s fee on cross-chain swaps from native Sui to wrapped Sui on Solana. Network and exchange fees still apply. Swaps into assets like Solana, Ethereum or USDC carry standard fees.

There is also a security angle. Exporting a recovery phrase makes the wallet portable, but anyone with the phrase controls it. A forced migration window is a natural target for impersonation. Phantom says it will not contact users first, ask for a phrase or offer to move assets. Slush says the same. That sort of warning is useful, but it only helps if users pay attention.

Interface power, not custody power

This situation separates two things that often get lumped together. Users control the credentials. Wallet providers control the interface: which networks appear, which balances show, which swaps and app connections work. Phantom does not hold user funds. Yet after Sept. 24, a Sui holder opening Phantom may see nothing from Sui. Existing app connections through Phantom will stop. Users will need to reconnect through a wallet that still supports Sui.

That is distribution power at the interface layer. The ledger remains open, ownership stays with the user, but access and convenience are shaped by wallet support.

What remains unproven is the cause. Phantom and Sui have not explained the split or given affected-user numbers. The evidence supports the interface-power argument while leaving economic, market or security reasons unclear.

Sept. 24 will be a visible test of how much influence wallet interfaces hold. The coins will still be there. The wallet layer will simply be gone.
