Bitcoin Rallies 26%, Faces Key Resistance at $81K-$86K

A record-setting short liquidation event drove Bitcoin (BTC) up 26% from its mid-August lows, marking one of the most significant recovery rallies in recent years. The surge was backed by $2.23 billion in spot ETF inflows, making it the strongest institutional intake of the year, alongside exchange outflows and across-the-board wallet accumulation. However, traders are now closely watching the $81K-$86K range, where significant resistance could temper further upside.

Short Liquidations Fuel the Rally

On August 19, 2026, Bitcoin saw its largest single-day short liquidation since 2019 in dollar terms. Over 85% of liquidated positions during the rally were shorts, cutting through major liquidation clusters. Futures open interest dropped 11% in BTC terms, while perpetual funding rates stayed neutral, indicating that the move wasn’t driven by speculative leverage but rather by forced short closures and real buying pressure.

As of August 26, Bitcoin is trading at $78,355, down 0.9% over the last 24 hours, with its market cap at $1.62 trillion. The latest resistance zone starts at $81K, overlapping with long-term holder cost basis levels and a dense band of remaining liquidation levels, signaling a critical test for bulls.

Institutional Buyers Lead the Charge

The rally coincided with robust ETF inflows totaling $2.23 billion over the squeeze period, the largest seven-day intake of 2026. This institutional demand, alongside the migration of coins from exchanges to custody solutions, underscores the role of real money in driving the recovery. Wallet data shows that entities holding 1,000-10,000 BTC offloaded 50.5K BTC since late June, while institutions, custodians, and ETFs absorbed 59.1K BTC over the same period. The ETF inflows are mirrored in exchange outflows, suggesting that coins are moving into long-term storage, which typically supports price stability.

Recovery Takes Shape

The broader on-chain metrics reflect a market in recovery. Bitcoin’s cycle composite, which aggregates 45 indicators, climbed back to neutral levels after spending seven months in bearish zones. Additionally, large-cap assets led the rally, with Bitcoin gaining 25% over the past month, while small-cap tokens lagged behind at just 6%. Historically, this “top-heavy” profile is consistent with early recovery phases, where liquidity concentrates in established assets before trickling down the market cap ladder.

Interestingly, Bitcoin’s recent decoupling from equities has caught traders’ attention. During the rally, BTC gained 25% while the S&P 500 slipped 1.7%, and the correlation between the two assets dropped near zero. While such breaks have historically mean-reverted within weeks, the current divergence suggests Bitcoin’s rally is driven by crypto-specific factors, particularly ETF flows and accumulation trends.

Key Levels to Watch

The $81K-$86K range presents a formidable resistance zone, where long-term holders who endured the bear market may look to exit at break-even levels. On the downside, support lies at $62K-$65K, largely held by short-term holders who entered during the June-August accumulation phase. Options markets also paint a neutral picture, with the largest expiries in September pricing Bitcoin within a $69K-$89.7K range, suggesting a consolidation phase is more likely than a breakout or breakdown in the near term.

Outlook

Bitcoin’s 26% rally has reignited bullish sentiment, but the market faces a critical test at $81K-$86K. If bulls can absorb the overhead supply, it could open the door to retest January’s highs. However, a failure at this resistance or a breakdown below $70K would signal a reversal to the $62K-$65K support zone. For now, traders should keep an eye on ETF flows and wallet accumulation trends, as they continue to provide crucial clues about the market’s underlying strength.
