NVIDIA acquires SchedMD, enhancing its open-source Slurm software to drive AI and HPC innovation. The acquisition supports diverse computing environments and broadens NVIDIA’s software ecosystem.

NVIDIA Bolsters AI Capabilities with SchedMD Acquisition

In a strategic move aimed at strengthening its position in high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI), NVIDIA has announced the acquisition of SchedMD, the principal developer behind the open-source workload management system, Slurm. This acquisition underscores NVIDIA’s commitment to enhancing the open-source software ecosystem, according to NVIDIA Newsroom.

Enhancing Open-Source Software

NVIDIA plans to continue the development and distribution of Slurm as a vendor-neutral, open-source software. Slurm is widely recognized for its scalability, throughput, and complex policy management capabilities, serving as the backbone for more than half of the top 10 and top 100 systems in the TOP500 list of supercomputers. This move ensures that Slurm remains accessible to a wide array of HPC and AI communities, supporting diverse hardware and software environments.

Supporting AI and HPC Innovation

The acquisition of SchedMD will allow NVIDIA to further invest in Slurm’s development, continuing its role as a leading open-source scheduler for HPC and AI. This collaboration will accelerate the integration of NVIDIA’s accelerated computing technologies with Slurm, optimizing workloads across computing infrastructures and supporting heterogeneous clusters with the latest innovations.

Impact on Industry and Research

SchedMD’s Slurm software is integral to the infrastructure needed for generative AI, utilized by foundation model developers and AI builders to manage model training and inference needs. NVIDIA’s enhanced support will extend to SchedMD’s extensive customer base, including cloud providers, manufacturers, and research labs across various sectors such as autonomous driving, healthcare, energy, and financial services.

Commitment to Open-Source Development

With a decade-long collaboration between the two companies, NVIDIA’s acquisition of SchedMD validates Slurm’s critical role in demanding HPC and AI environments. Danny Auble, CEO of SchedMD, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting NVIDIA’s deep expertise in accelerated computing as pivotal for advancing Slurm’s development to meet future AI and supercomputing demands.

Through this acquisition, NVIDIA reinforces its dedication to fostering an open-source software ecosystem that propels HPC and AI innovation across industries and scales. For further details, visit the [NVIDIA Newsroom](https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/nvidia-acquires-schedmd/).
